Fishing in Ireland with Fishing Away: rain test, BBQ on the boat, trout and pike dreams!
What have we tested fishing in Ireland? Well, first of all, me Voicu Alexandru Gabriel, on Cox, the rain gear, the boots, the hands, eyes and feet, the meat on us and off the beef and mutton boat grill, the beer Guinness and Jameson whisky, pike and trout from Lough Ree and the River Shannon, lures, lines, rods, reels, good cheer, much laughter, needles, razors, boats, motors and barges. Wet. It's all about Fishing Away!
Fishing in Ireland, The Wet and The Furious
It's normal that it rains in Ireland, especially when I go fishing. Aside from my own sociopathic cloud that follows me around and rains on me wherever I go fishing, before I left for Ireland I actually prepared myself for the rain. Because yes, it always rains often and lightly in Ireland, but what can you see, in October the rainy season begins. I scroll like a poker game weather forecast on the net, the area Athlone (Lough Ree) and of course I have a full house of code oranges with wind and rain. I'm recalculating baggage, two rain suits, two pairs of boots and clothes with no mercy. Before leaving, knowing about the rain, Gabi sends me a message:
"Come on sI'll give you oil better day Warming up tomorrow, moderate wind all week and light rain. It won't be half of what you imagine. Dacianand yet you think you are bringing the flood after you, you can stop at the church, I know a good one in Dublin, a skilled clergyman, all that…”
I told him to send them the akathist directly, to give it to the priest with a comma. Before we got on the plane Cox asked me one more time: Well, are you sure you want to go to Ireland in October in the rain? All in, well yes, right?
The last day of trout fishing in Ireland, the first day of "if it rains…”
I missed a day of fishing in Ireland because of the company flights Ryanair arrive in Dublin at 00:50 at night, plus another half hour to retrieve the special bag with rods, plus another hour and a half to Athlone, plus a few beers, a glass of whiskey, two, plus fishing stories, no- he started in the morning with his luggage unopened. There was neither brain nor liver left to go out on the water. The plan was to fish for trout for two days (that's all we had until prohibition started) and the rest for pike. The next day we took heart in our teeth, all our raincoats and set off in search of trout. The wind was quite strong, but bearable, short and frequent rains, equally bearable (because, well, Ireland) would only herald what was to come. I felt it too, the weather radars also showed something with red and orange that it was approaching, naturally the fish also went on their bellies. I only caught a few of 30-35-40 cm, I wasn't targeting them, but the 60 cm plus ones, trout that I saw on the sonar and dreamed of Gabi's pictures. Gorgeous, there is nothing more beautiful on the lakes of Ireland than those trout. Please, that's enough, let's move the telephoto lens to pike and flood, shall we?
Wow, caught at least 36mm of rain and 60mph winds fishing in Ireland
Well, that's how it started, as I didn't hope it would be, but I knew it would be fishing in Ireland. At least for me. Gabi told me that there are two such periods a year, well known as the times, normally it shouldn't happen like that if anyone other than my person went. I also convinced Gabi in what followed. Well, my dears, and it started to rain, not rain, flood, what you saw in the video is like that, trailer, a passing rain started, to pass through everything. Through waterproof clothing, through us, through phones and video cameras. But I persevered, I fished, I caught some big pike, but not the ones I was aiming for. Again, take another look Gabi's pictures. In the following days, winds between 80 and 100 km per hour were announced, we had no way of resisting that on the boat. And no way on Lough Ree. Let's go down the Shannon, shall we?
Shannon, you crazy river
Despite the weather forecast, what to see, in the morning it was not raining, the wind was not blowing, until you think? We calmly put the boat on the water, we went confidently to the signs of the Bearded Man, we went confidently to the hot spots and to the first launch...surprise! No, not the big pike, the flood! And wind and rain. 70-80 km and 30 mm per hour. Someone is laughing at us, it's clear. And I resisted, and I caught something, and I took another look through Gabi's pictures. We quickly move on, the boat is completely out of the scheme, the only viable solution to continue fishing is the approach from the shore. Two gorgeous rivers followed, dreamy Irish roads and scenery, apathetic fish, but also some more dressed pike. Missed. We also understand them, that with that wind of 100 km per hour, that's how it intensified, it's hard to stay under water, at least to take the lure in your mouth properly. Because we could barely fit the cigarettes in our mouths, the pike and the beers in our hands, right?
Rain does not pass through the stomach, but the rainbow passes through the roof of the mouth?
However, Bărbosu', for his sake, gave us a beautiful day to go out by boat one more day. With a rainbow, not one, but two, with good weather, with a pike of 91 cm, again, that's all we could do this time, for dreams, give a refresh via Gabi's pictures. I didn't find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but I did have a grill on the boat, with smoke to see us from afar, it was worth all the leprechaun's money. Angus beef and Irish lamb are something special, common in Ireland, much like Tecuci mustard is here. And for the price and taste, they can even be found in gas stations, I swear. Splashed with a red wine or a Guinness beer of your choice, on a boat, with toast, in a beautiful landscape and lake, it's hard to express the feeling in words, photos or video. I suggest you go there and try it on your taste buds, no?
I swear I only go fishing in Ireland with…
Well, let me tell you about fishing equipment, needles, razors and quills. You must have looked through it once more Gabi's pictures and you've put Ireland on the map in 2025, wondering what to take with you? I told you about the rain here, even if I come or not, it always rains lightly in Ireland. Take what you want, where you want, how you want, how you think, but if you fall on the three periods of rain (the two traditional ones and the one when I come) know that the passing rain also passes through 30000 mm material if you are not standing (Gabi also had problems on the left side). For me, the secret was to be a little angry, to put a puffer jacket under the suit and two rows of essentials at the feet (immene in Romanian). In short, a good mix, the rain didn't touch my skin in the version Bib&Brace jumpsuit, plus Wading Olive jacket. Aaah, and I didn't sit low, but upright and honest! Another tip for rain gear, not stories or fishing companies, I got it in this outing from Cox. With a jacket and trousers from Outdoor Research it was the driest of us, despite the light equipment that does not weigh much in the luggage. It can also be seen on video that he defeated us, didn't he? Anyways, to remember this brand.
What pike like in Ireland
I alone, be it Ireland, Sweden or any other destination with respectable pike, I serve them pretty much the same menu, a menu that I found as a common denominator in Gabi's (many) kits as well. There is no surprise anymore, so, recap, the 5 from Strike Pro who frightened the north: Miuras Mouse, Buster Jerk, guppe, Pig Shad, Wolf Tail. You also throw a hand of spinnerbaits Yes Bush, plus a few big swings from Berti and you have pretty much everything you need. I felt the need for some more wobbling minnow suspending, I didn't have them with me because there was no more room in my luggage, that's it, next time. In the rods category, and it's simple, the two Daiwa Tournament of the soul with reels There is and certainly for city girls and o cast iron BFT Lizzard for country girls, with a BFT multiplier Instinct they were, are and will be everything I need. Both BFTs with signature Stefan Trumstedt they are available at a decent price. Here I put it Daiwa J Braid and multicolour, budget threads in case you were wondering.
Ayu who are you mother?
For trout, as I told you above, we didn't get to fish as much as we would have liked, we will get our revenge next year, for sure. At Gabi's suggestion I took some wobblers Jackall Tricolor, the majority color Ayu, because that's what he said and that's how I like them too. The trout also liked them, small but rare for us this time. Anyway, some brilliant wobbler both in terms of looks, evolution and castability. I also threw in a handful of oscillating Typhoon, without which I never go trout fishing. And not only for trout, I also told about here. Speaking of telling and enjoying, in Ireland we hit the water and the Airity combo, originally scheduled for barbel and clean fishing with cheburashka, but I said to try it with trout as well. Vis, an all-rounder that I recommend for any fishing application for clean, barbel, gummy trout, wobblers, wobblers, cicadas and whatever else you can think of with weights between 3 and 12 grams. I also tested the new thread Daiwa J-Braid Grand, budget. At this price, like, right?
The Romanian's question, how much does it cost to fish in Ireland?
Fishing Away is an early stage trial fishing program for trout, perch, pike and maybe soon sea bass in Ireland. Why incipient, that Gabi does he have all the know-how of a professional fishing guide and knows Irish waters like the back of his hand? Incipient because he and Bianca they started this project, Fishing Away, a year ago. Ha, ha, I can say I was their godfather, well, I gave them a bath, didn't I? Joking aside, a lot of heart is put into this project so that everything will be perfect in the future. For me it still was, from the fishing and fish experience we all dream of, to the historic scenery and culinary delights. Ireland has many hidden treasures and Gabi could win Master Chef with one hand in her pocket and the other on the rod. OK, OK, but how much does it cost? In 2025, each group will have a personalized offer according to their wishes and needs, accommodation (hotel or airbnb), meals (and on the boat, pfff how is that life, my God), pike and trout fishing, airport transfer, guided visits, wanted and not wanted. The fact is that it will not cost you more than a stay in the Danube Delta, with the plane ticket included, ask for an offer and you will prove me right. By the way, before you schedule any fishing trip, anywhere, anytime, give me a sign and let me know if I'm around, I will be. To get away from the rain, right?
